New Fancy, Forest of Dean

Great spotted woodpecker on branch

Sunday, 18 March 2007

11 members met at New Fancy View on a damp, misty morning. Failing to spot goshawk we searched the opposite hill and were pleased to see redpoll, siskin, crossbill and brambling.
We moved to Cannop Ponds and saw mandarin, great spotted woodpecker and a tree creeper. Farther into the forest on a blackthorn the wintering great grey shrike gave us excellent close up views.
After lunch Parkend churchyard produced the goshawk and a raven. On the way home Woorgreen Lake offered greylag goose, little grebe and goosander.
A rather wet day had given us 51 species.
