Wildlife of Montenegro

Tuesday, 2 December 2008

Roy Croucher led wildlife tours to Montenegro for a number of years before the breakup of Yugoslavia and painted an interesting picture of a land of primitive and very friendly people on the verge of great change.

The landscape itself is not "pretty" but contains a wide variety of habitats, from mountains, lakes and high plateaux to marshland, salt pans, dry grassland and of course the seashore. This diversity produces a wide range of wildlife. Many of the birds which migrate down the Adriatic coast were familiar but we were also treated to views of many more species not seen in this country, from vultures to bee-eaters. There is also a wealth of beautiful wild flowers, butterflies and other insects.

Montenegro is now trying to develop its tourist industry and it is hoped that this is done sympathetically and does not destroy the very things that visitors come to see.
