Visit to Farne Island - Northumberland (Spring 2007) "A Personal View"

Thursday, 5 April 2007

A cluster of islands off the Northumberland coast is a photographers paradise. Arctic terns nest in large quantities and we experienced the males 'diving' towards us in an effort to protect their nests ... I would certainly recommend the wearing of headwear!

We were able to get close to nesting eider duck which were so tame we could stroke them and they didn't move away. We saw razorbill, guillemot, shag and kittiwake which covered the rocky cliff.

We travelled by boat from Seahouses Pier to Inner Farne Island with puffin in small numbers. A boardwalk is provided and we had the delight of seeing several tern and eider duck nesting close by which gave us a wonderful photographic opportunity.
