We were lucky this year. As I advertised the event during May and June Indoor meetings I promised it would be dry! And it WAS!! But not particularly warm. We had a smaller attendance than normal due to other activities going on the day (7.7.07 - I think had something to do with it!).
We also had a change of chefs!! Norman and Roy could not make it this year and their places were filled by Simon and Dave, Simon was seen running up and down the garden from BBQ to kitchen (until he employed Jackie as his runner! - How much did he pay you Jackie?) and Dave had everyone in stitches displaying his lily white legs from underneath a Scottish kilt apron complete with sporran!
A great evening, thank you for coming along and a further thank you to everyone who provided salads and puds.
Sunday, 22 July 2007

It was a very strange start to the day on Sunday 22nd July 2007 - a strange yellow glow in a blue sky- a sight that none of us had seen for many days/weeks. Indeed, the Friday before this event had seen 9cm of rain fall from the skies and many parts of the country were to see drastic flooding in the days after this Sunday. Many of our own members were on flood alert for days.
This was the day that Bedfont Lakes had set for their Summer Fair and it was the first time we had ever attended. Alan Sharps made a good job or organising this event with Bedfont Lakes and we were well prepared for the 5,000 - 7,000 punters we were told to expect! We had a good team of volunteers set for the day and the stall was ready by 11.30am for a 12.00 noon start. We were not to be disappointed! The steady flow of punters went on all day.
Mick Cooper and Geoff Allen showed people birds on the lake, that is until the Newfoundland dogs took to swimming with their owners! Dave Braddock ran a Tombola stall of cuddly toys! Graham Carey sold his cards (his photographs that he has converted to gift blank gift cards). We also had RSPB Sales and Simon Lumsden, in charge of membership, did a fantastic job. The rest of us engaged with the public, gave away Name Gathering Cards, chatted about the RSPB and were generally kept busy.
The sun shone all day and most people seemed glad to be out and about in the fresh air. The results for everyone's hard work
9 Memberships (7 on Direct Debit)
£60.00 on Tombola (hence the cuddly toys in the picture!!)
£30.00 on Pin Badges
£25.00 on Graham's Cards (Graham takes photos, gets them printed and gives the RPSB his profit)
£17.00 on RSPB Sales.
57 Name Gathering Cards (31 Adults and 26 children)
Thanks goes to all those mentioned above as well as Marion Sharps, Jan Bagley, Janet Seldon, Ray and Lynn Wilson, Peter Hambrook, Neil Bew, Dave Campbell, Hannah Lane, Jackie Phyall, Karen Pankhurst and David Shenton.
