*Help needed for the BTO*

*Help needed for the BTO*

This is a very short item in order to introduce myself and appeal for help with some of the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) bird surveys for which I am responsible. Some of you will already know of me, either because you are a member of the BTO (as I am the Surrey Regional Rep for the BTO) or because you are a member of the Surrey Bird Club (as I am the membership secretary for the club). My name is Penny Williams and I am fortunate enough to live in Chobham which is close to the heaths of north-west Surrey..
The one-off BTO survey with which I am going to need help is due to take place this spring and it will involve looking for (or, as is more likely, listening out for) Nightingales in the early mornings and I am going to need lots of help with that survey. I also have two other surveys where I could do with more surveyors. One, the WeBS survey needs a regular commitment once a month over the winter months (although it can be carried over into the summer as well) surveying an area of water for the waterbirds (including gulls and terns if you wish) present there. The other survey is only in carried out in spring/early summer and is known as the BBS survey. For BBS you do two walks at least four weeks apart along two "transects" in a 1 KM square so the actual survey covers 2 KM. The aim is to identify all the birds seen during those two transects.
All information obtained from any of these surveys goes to the BTO and is then used by them and the other conservation to make informed decisions on conservation
I have just started my own website where I give more information about these surveys and also list the vacant sites that I have. If you are at all interested in helping with any of these surveys (and have internet access) then please go to this website. The website address is www.surreybtorep.co.uk
I know it is often easier to talk face to face or over the telephone so I will be attending your group's Talk on Wednesday 22nd March so, if you are able to attend that event, please come and meet me so that I can tell you more.
Alternatively please do not hesitate to send me an e-mail at penny@waxwing.plus.com. or ring me on 01276 857736. Let me have your telephone number and then I can give you a call back. I do work so it may be a few days before I get back to you but I am more than willing to talk to anyone about any help that can be offered with any form of bird survey.."
