Wey Manor MeadowsWey Manor Meadows lie between the River Wey and the Wey Navigation Canal. Coxes Mill can be found at the northern end and New Haw Lock at its southern point. Gravelling has occurred over the last 10 years and where workings are now completed, topsoil has been replaced and a pond created. Gravel work continues further down the area, but there is less disturbance now than for many years. The result is an improvement in quantity and diversity of wildlife. Seventy bird species have been recorded there recently. During the winter months good flocks of Lapwing can be seen as well as Redwings, Fieldfare, and Siskins. During the spring of 2007 Lapwings and Little Ringed Plover could also be found around the new pond. Tawny Owls have been heard during the early hours of the morning and indeed seen as well as Little Owl and Barn Owl. The summer months bring the usual hirundines and Sand Martins have made good use of the gravel workings. Kingfishers are regulars on both the canal and the river whilst Great Spotted, Green and an occasional Lesser Spotted Woodpecker use the trees and fields adjacent to the river. A circular walk using footpaths can take anything from 40 minutes to a couple of hours and depending on time of year flora and fauna seen can include flowers such as Betony, Dame's Violet, Common Toadflax and Tufted Vetch. Mammals seen include foxes, badger and Roe Deer.
