Beachern Wood - New Forest

Pair of Scottish crossbills at nest

Sunday, 23 October 2011

11 lucky people met at Beachern Wood on 23rd October 2011. Soon after leaving the car park we had excellent views of a firecrest, followed by siskin and redpoll. On reaching the stream we saw a grey wagtail.

After leaving the wood a Dartford warbler showed well, then a goshawk and 2 ravens flew over the trees. A few redwings and fieldfares were around joining the resident mistle thrushes.

Another highlight was a colourful flock of crossbills. Towards the end of the morning we had a flyover by 5 hawfinches, ending the walk on high!
