Field Meeting at Rye Harbour

Sedge warbler perched on phragmites

Thursday, 1 May 2008

1/5: Rye Harbour. On a windy but sunny day a number of migrants had appeared, including Northern Wheatear, Whitethroat, Yellow Wagtail, Sedge Warbler and the first Swifts we had seen this year. A small group of Turnstones were in breeding plumage, much more colourful than the winter garb we usually see them in at this latitude. A good number of Mediterranean Gulls were nesting with the Black-headed Gulls, giving a good opportunity for side by side comparisons, and there were several Common Terns together with the more numerous Sandwich Terns. A group of 12 feeding (and mating) Avocet were a good bonus.
Overall 50 species were seen and an additional one (Cetti's Warbler) heard.
