Field Meeting at New Hythe Gravel Pits

Female great tit

Tuesday, 9 December 2008

Even after a period of very cold weather with northerly winds we were too early for the most interesting wintering wildfowl at this venue.
There were large numbers of Redwing, very flighty and often rather difficult to see in the by now sparsely-berried hawthorn scrub; but unusually very few Fieldfare with the Blackbirds and Song Thrushes.
Two Great Tits were singing!
A cold, bright day allowed us good views of most of our comparatively small total of 27 species, which for the first time for several years did not include Cetti's Warbler.
