Our 2009 coach trips - part one

Bittern feeding in reedbeds

Saturday, 21 February 2009

Both our group's coach trips this year were to East Anglia and we enjoyed glorious sunshine on both days. In February we visited, firstly, the Society's new reserve at Fen Drayton Gravel Pits, where an inland reedbed habitat has been created, suitable for birds such as bittern and bearded tit. A few of us were extremely fortunate to see a bittern flying round and round in brilliant sunshine. For those who missed out there were still large numbers of wildfowl and waders to enjoy. Our second destination on the day was the Wildfowl and Wetland reserve at Welney. Flooding restricted us to the centre and main hide but we were able to observe Bewick and whooper swans, bean geese, barn owls, several bird of prey species and much else beside.
