VISIT TO HOLT HEATH AND WHITE SHEET PLANTATION - 7TH MAY 2008

Male blackcap in hawthorn bush

Thursday, 8 May 2008

8 members arrived at the White Sheet Plantation for our visit to Holt Heath on a nice sunny day.
The paths were a little difficult to tour round as this was my first visit having only had a brief earlier guide from Don and we ended up back at the car park by a different route than that planned.
In the first half hour very few birds were seen but as the day progressed we had good sightings of 23 species including marsh harrier, kestrel, buzzard, hobby, stonechat, dartford warbler, cuckoo, great spotted woodpecker and treecreeper.
9 species were heard only including willow warbler, yellow hammer, blackcap and goldcrest.
We were also pleased to see a grass snake swimming in a pool and a common lizard and some nice butterflies including brimstone, speckled wood, holly blue and peacock.
This was only our 3rd time to visit this area but not only is the wild life excellent but also
the gorse in full bloom in an enclosed area is spectacular and a great area to see dartford warbler.
