Hobby chasing dragonflies

End of term (nearly) report

Just one more event to go on this programme, our local walk at Cornmill Meadows, this Friday, June 27th, now led by Terry Smith.

The last few months have been very busy, after our successful sponsored birdwatch at the beginning of May, we had a walk at Fishers Green the next morning. The highlights were the 5 Black terns and 10 singing nightingales.

Our trip to Minsmere on the 17th May, was very well attended, and we were rewarded with 100sp. The highlights were the Little stint and Temminck's stint, standing next to each other, Dartford Warbler, Pied flycatcher and a Tawny owl who was heard calling in the afternoon.

We had a change of speaker - twice! -for our May meeting, Duncan McNiven gave an excellent talk on the work of the 'Bird Detectives'- the investigation department of the RSPB.

June started with a walk at Northaw Great Wood on the 1st, with the drama regarding the great spotted woodpecker juvenile.

We had a walk on the wild side with the wildlife explorers group from RSPB Rye Meads on 14th June, with birds, bugs, butterflies, orchids and dragonflies!

Winds and butterflies don't usually mix well together but despite the very gusty conditions at RSPB Strumpshaw Fen on 22nd June, some members were fortunate to see Swallowtail butterflies. Other highlights were the Norfolk Hawker dragonflies and the good views had of the Marsh harriers and hobbies over the reedbeds.

Our final meeting on 24th June saw Ann & Phil Farrer take us to 'Ecuador- Birds, Bugs and Butterflies'- with excellent photo's of the beautiful humming birds found in the area.

We also had our 100 Club six monthly draw, the winners were: £81 Dorothy Blatcher and £40.50 Ruth Shinebaum.

Don't forget, full reports of all our outings are on our trip reports section and our new programme will be on-line soon.
