New Year News

We started the year with 25 supporters on our annual car trip at Tollsbury via Abberton Reservoir, on Jan 6th, followed by 27 supporters on our car trip to RSPB Rainham Marshes on the 12th.

Our first meeting on the 29th Jan saw the welcome return of John Wyatt telling us 'Don't Trash Alaska!' An excellent presentation, as always, from John. At this meeting we were able to announce a further donation to the RSPB, of £1,000.00, towards the work being carried out at our local reserve, Rye Meads.

Feb 2nd was our General Knowledge Quiz, our most successful yet, just under £1,000 was raised, so many thanks to all who attended the quiz or helped organise it - and make a diary note - next years date is January 31st 2009.

On the 3rd Feb we had a local walk at Holyfield Hall farm and the Goosefield at Fishers Green, we had 22 supporters on this walk. On 9th we led 16 RSPB young Wildlife Explorers, plus family and teachers from the Rye Meads group, around Fishers Green, great fun! Our annual coach trip to TItchwell and Holkham was supported by 35 people who between them spotted 96 bird species plus 7 mammal species, and had glorious weather. On 24th, Ted Bell led the Beached Bird Survey along the coast at Tollesbury, fortunately only finding 2 dead gulls and 1 dead Brent goose.

Steve Rowland, RSPB Public Affairs Manager, Eastern England Region, gave a talk at the 26th Feb meeting, updating us on the conservation work being carried out in our new region, a very interesting evening. (If you could not make the meeting, Butterbumps are Bitterns, Thick-knees are Stone Curlews, and Tangle-pickers are Turnstones!)

Our Group Secretary, Angela Dobson, and our RSPB Sales Organiser, Anne Betts, are both stepping down from the committee in April. We are looking for volunteers to fill these two important posts, if you feel you might be able to take a more active role in your group, please contact Terry Smith, Group leader, for more details.

HELP NEEDED -

On July 26th we are holding a collection at Brookfield Farm shopping centre, between the Tesco and M & S stores, and need volunteers to help. If you can spare an hour or two on the day, between 9am and 3pm, please contact Terry Smith.

COMING EVENTS -

Why not join us on one of our coming coach trips? We are visiting RSPB Dungeness on 29th March, Stodmarsh NNR on April 20th, RSPB Minsmere on May 17th and RSPB Strumpshaw Fen on June 22nd - all great areas to visit, hope to see you on one of our coach trips!
