August Round-Up

100 CLUB
Our monthly 100 Club winners for August were:-1st Mrs Joan Hill 2nd Mrs Vera Reeves. Don't forget to contact Geoff Brown if you would like to join our fundraising club, using the 'contact us' link above. (If you would like to join from our September draw, the cost is £9 - (that is £7 plus a one-off £2 admin charge) Last season a total of £535 was raised by club members for RSPB projects.

LOCAL BIRDS
Garganey and ruff were seen this month at Rye Meads reserve plus up to 9 green sandpipers. Garganey were still being seen from the Draper hide on 26th and the kingfishers have finally fledged their young. A spotted flycatcher was seen at Amwell on 31st Aug and black tailed godwits were at Kings Mead towards the end of the month. A few hobby have been seen around, and there have been sightings of osprey, red kite, marsh & hen harriers in places such as Wilstone Reservoir, Dead Man's Hill, Tringford Reservoir and locally, an osprey was seen flying over Rye Meads on 28th.

COMING EVENTS:
Our 2009/10 programme is now online and as usual, newsletters and programmes will be delivered in our area by the beginning of September. Remember, you can book your coach seats now with Barrie for any of the coming trips. Our first event of the 2009/10 programme is a car trip on Saturday September 19th, to Cliffe Pools and Oare Marshes. Please contact Derrick Ling during the week commencing September 12th for additional details regarding car parking etc. The first group meeting on Sept 29th features Chris Tyas with his talk on 'Essex - Beyond a Joke!'

We will be at the Nazeing Fun Day, at LVRPA Clayton Hill site, on September 12th, with a fundraising and information stall. Why not come along and say hello or try your luck on our 'singing birds, etc' Tombola! For more details visit the website at www.nazeingfestival.org

We would be very grateful for any donations for the tombola and sales table on November 15th at our 'Meet your Group' event at Rye Meads, please bring them along to the Sept or Oct group meeting.

STORT VALLEY GROUP QUIZ SEPT 19TH
The Stort Valley RSPB Local Group Quiz night is on September 19th, at the Charis Centre, Water Lane, Bishop's Stortford, (next to the Waitrose car park). Tickets are £8.50 each, including either a Fish & Chips or Chicken & Chips supper. Bring your own drinks.
