Along with literally thousands of wildfowl and waders that greeted us as we looked out of the hides onto the reserve, were a number of special birds that can make a visit to Cley particularly memorable. A Little Auk on the sea with a supporting cast of Guillemots, Razorbills and Red-throated Divers, a Rough-legged Buzzard was one of seven raptors that were seen in the area. More...

At Cliffe, amongst the many little egrets around the edges of the pools we found 2 spoonbills. These later gave two close fly-pasts. The Yellow Wagtails were a real surprise. We saw 2 adults (at least) and a well marked juvenile. We then saw 3 juvenile wagtails on top of a tree which I initially thought were Pied but further investigation has confirmed them as Yellow ......so if anyone tells you Pied Wagtail is missing that's the reason!! More...

It proved to be a real birding red letter day. Without doubt, top of the list were two Lapland Buntings on an island close to one of the hides, a new bird for many people. But the very impressive 'also ran' list included; hen harrier (m & f), little gull, twite, tree sparrow, corn bunting, scaup, whooper swan and three barn owls, one at the reserve and two from the coach on the way home. More...

The main roads were fine but the access road into Ouse Washes was dodgy, being covered in ice and with an adverse camber towards a ditch. We had several sightings of osprey, sitting by the nest and flying over. Good views of red kite both from the coach and over the reserve. A drake garganey was seen and a grasshopper warbler was heard and seen. From the new hides we had good views of several yellow wagtails including a sub species, thought to be a Beema. Six people met at Abberton reservoir before moving to Tollesbury. It was a cloudy day with a fresh wind, but thankfully more mild than of late. The recent snow and cold weather suggested it was likely that there would be a high count on the survey, but fortunately we found only one dead bird. Our first winter visitors were seen: wigeon on Friday Lake and on Bowyers Water along with a male goldeneye. Redwings were seen feeding amongst the bushes by the path around Bowyers Water. More...
