Amwell evening walk report

Adult black-tailed godwit in summer plummage, at the RSPB Snettisham nature reserve, Norfolk

Friday, 29 June 2007

Mick Oakland led this evening walk at Amwell. The weather was dry with sunny periods although black clouds threatened rain at the beginning of the walk. 15 people attended the final local walk of the current programme.

Highlights:

Amwell didn't disappoint with fine views of a Black-tailed Godwit in the shallow water in front of the Viewpoint, Little Ringed Plover, Redshank and a Yellow Wagtail were also recorded, two well grown fox cubs were a delightful find from the water vole viewing area. As we arrived back at the cars a little earlier than anticipated three of us had a second bite of the cherry at the Amwell Viewpoint and our persistence was rewarded with a Cuckoo, two Little Egrets and an overhead Hobby.

A total of 43 bird species were seen by the group:

Cormorant, Grey Heron, Little Egret, Mute Swan, Greylag Goose, Canada Goose, Gadwall, Mallard, Tufted Duck, Buzzard, Kestrel, Hobby, Pheasant, Moorhen, Coot, Little Ringed Plover, Lapwing, Black-tailed Godwit, Redshank, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Common Tern, Woodpigeon, Cuckoo, Swift, Swallow, House Martin, Yellow Wagtail, Wren, Dunnock, Robin, Blackbird, Song Thrush, Sedge Warbler, Reed Warbler, Blackcap, Chiffchaff, Willow Warbler, Magpie, Carrion Crow, Chaffinch, Greenfinch, Goldfinch, Reed Bunting.
