Local walk around Amwell Quarry and New River Path

Male wigeon swimming

Sunday, 7 October 2007

This walk was planned for Amwell Quarry and Post Wood. However, a riding event was taking place in the field adjoining the wood. This would have entailed the group using a footpath across the riding course, so Derrick Ling, our leader, decided to change the route, spending additional time in the Amwell Quarry area.

The weather was dry and mild, with high cloud and brief sunny intervals. 21 supporters plus Derrick joined the walk.

A total of 43 bird species were seen by the group (H=heard only)

Great Crested Grebe, Little Grebe, Cormorant, Grey Heron, Little Egret, Mute Swan, Canada Goose, Mallard, Gadwall, Wigeon, Teal, Shoveler, Tufted Duck, Pochard, Buzzard, Kestrel, Pheasant (H), Moorhen, Coot, Lapwing, Snipe, Black-headed Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Great Black-backed Gull, Stock Dove, Woodpigeon, Green Woodpecker, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Grey Wagtail, Dunnock, Cetti's Warber (H), Robin, Blackbird, Long-tailed Tit, Great Tit, Blue Tit, Wren, Reed Bunting, Chaffinch, Goldfinch, Jay, Magpie, Carrion Crow.

Other Wildlife seen:

Mammals : Rabbit, Grey Squirrel

Butterfly : Red Admiral was the only butterfly identified

Many thanks to Derrick for organising this trip.
