Coach trip to RSPB Snettisham

little egret, wading, water

Saturday, 20 October 2007

31 people attended the first coach outing of the new season to Snettisham RSPB Reserve led by Mike Oakland. It was a very pleasant sunny day, unexpectedly warm for the time of year.

The early afternoon high tide proved to be excellent timing for us but unfortunately due to a low high tide (neap tide) the wildfowl and waders were some distance away out on the mud. Nevertheless we had an enjoyable day with 78 birds recorded during the trip. Undoubtedly the star bird was a Great Grey Shrike seen by many members of the group. Other highlights included Barn Owl, Pink-footed Geese, Grey Partridge and a rather dubious Snow Goose amongst the feral Greylags.

78 Bird Species seen :
Little Grebe, Cormorant, Little Egret, Grey Heron, Mute Swan, Pink-footed Goose, Greylag Goose, Canada Goose, Snow Goose, Shelduck, Wigeon, Gadwall, Teal, Mallard, Pintail, Tufted Duck, Goldeneye, Marsh Harrier, Sparrowhawk, Kestrel, Red-legged Partridge, Grey Partridge, Pheasant, Moorhen, Coot, Oystercatcher, Ringed Plover, Golden Plover, Grey Plover, Lapwing, Knot, Dunlin, Bar-tailed Godwit, Curlew, Redshank, Greenshank, Turnstone, Black-headed Gull, Common Gull, Herring Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Great Black-backed Gull, Woodpigeon, Collared Dove, Barn Owl, Green Woodpecker, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Skylark, Meadow Pipit, Pied Wagtail, Wren, Dunnock, Robin, Stonechat, Blackbird, Fieldfare, Song Thrush, Redwing, Mistle Thrush, Blackcap, Goldcrest, Long-tailed Tit, Coal Tit, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Great Grey Shrike, Jay, Magpie, Jackdaw, Rook, Carrion Crow, Starling, House Sparrow, Chaffinch, Greenfinch, Goldfinch, Linnet and Reed Bunting.
