Family walk at Fishers Green, jointly with Rye Meads WEX group

Long-tailed tit perched on branch

Saturday, 9 February 2008

This walk was led by Terry Smith, assisted by Ann Smith, Mike Oakland, Ed Hughes and Terry Wilkins. The morning was sunny and really warm for February.

16 WEX members joined this walk with relatives plus 4 WEX teachers. The children were very keen on looking through the telescopes, and the puddles and mud proved popular with the younger ones!

A total of 28 bird species were seen or heard by the group:

Little grebe, great crested grebe, cormorant, grey heron, mute swan, graylag and Canada geese, gadwall, teal, mallard, shoveler, pochard, tufted duck, moorhen, coot, lapwing, black-headed and lesser black backed gulls, woodpigeon, great spotted woodpecker (heard drumming as well), robin, blackbird, long-tailed, great and blue tit, magpie, carrion crow and chaffinch.

Thanks to Caroline, Marion, Sandra and Keith - from Rye Meads WEX group, and to everyone for their help today. The next joint walk is on Saturday 14th June, looking for Summer visitors such as nightingales and warblers. Book early with Rye Meads!
