Evening walk at Cornmill Meadows, Waltham Abbey

Long-tailed tit perched on branch

Friday, 27 June 2008

Terry Smith led this walk around Cornmill Meadows as Mike Oakland was unable to lead the original planned walk at Monkhams Hill. It was a very pleasant warm evening, cloudy but luckily, dry. 21 people were on the walk.

The meadows were very overgrown, cattle have now been introduced there but have made very little headway yet! House and sand martins were hawking over the open water and common terns were seen along the river.

Highlight:
Most people heard and saw a kingfisher at very close quarters along the old River Lea.

A total of 33 bird species were seen or heard by the group:

Grey heron, mallard, gadwall, kestrel, pheasant, moorhen, coot, lapwing, black-headed gull, common tern, woodpigeon, swift, kingfisher, green woodpecker, great spotted woodpecker, sand martin, house martin, wren, robin, blackbird, song thrush, mistle thrush, sedge warbler, blackcap, chiffchaff, long-tailed tit, great tit, magpie, jackdaw, carrion crow, starling, chaffinch and reed bunting

Other Wildlife:

Rabbit

Thanks to Terry for leading this walk.
