Family walk at Fishers Green

Children birdwatching

Saturday, 14 February 2009

On today's family walk at Fishers Green, led by Terry Smith, volunteers from our group and from RSPB Rye Meads took a party of young WEX members over to Holyfield Hall Farm. The weather was very good, after a cold start it became sunny and quite warm.

We had a short talk explaining how the LVRPA works towards helping wildlife on the farm. As we walked along the path we spotted lots of birds, very good views were had of a female kestrel sitting on top of a telegraph pole.

Other highlights: the buzzard sitting on a small tree for ages and then the 2 buzzards seen soaring, the small herd of fallow deer in the wood edge and, of course, the icy puddles!

34 species were seen:
Cormorant, grey heron, greylag geese, canada geese, Egyptian geese, kestrel, sparrowhawk, common buzzard, lapwing, black-headed gull, common gull, woodpigeon, great spotted woodpecker, skylark, meadow pipit, pied wagtail, dunnock, robin, blackbird, fieldfare, great tit, blue tit, jay, magpie, jackdaw, rook, carrion crow, collared dove, house sparrow, starling, chaffinch, greenfinch, goldfinch and reed bunting.

Other wildlife:
Rabbits and Fallow Deer
