Morning walk to Holyfield Hall Farm & the Grand Weir hide

Male lapwing in breeding habitat

Wednesday, 18 February 2009

15 supporters joined Terry & Ann on this walk on a dry, mild but overcast morning.

At the farm, a buzzard was spotted perched in a tree and one was seen soaring over the woods. Singing skylarks & meadow pipits were seen and heard over the fields, and various geese were feeding on the fields near the path.

The new Grand Weir hide gives good views over Holyfield Lake and the weir, as well as over the goosefield and the farm fields. A large flock of lapwing were seen flying around and finally landing on the islands above the weir.

At the end of the walk we stopped at the Bittern Information Point, a bittern had been seen earlier, flying across the reedbed opposite, but we had no luck this morning.
