Morning fundraising walk at Fishers Green

Oystercatcher wading in shallow water

Wednesday, 10 June 2009

17 supporters joined Terry & Ann on this walk. The weather was dry to start, followed by heavy showers, which eased later in the morning, still quite warm.

Highlights:
We managed to hear and see several nightingales, busy collecting food. We spotted an oystercatcher, calling as it flew overhead. A silent cuckoo, probably a female, landed on the tree next to the Bittern Information hide, and was chased off by small birds.

The wild plants and orchids in the 'Taste of the Wild' area were much admired. A lone Bee orchid was found along with many Early and Southern Marsh orchids.

49 Species were seen:
Little grebe, great crested grebe, cormorant, grey heron, mute swan, canada goose, gadwall, mallard, pochard, tufted duck, ruddy duck, pheasant, moorhen, coot, oystercatcher, black headed gull, lesser black back gull, common tern, woodpigeon, collared dove, cuckoo, swift, green woodpecker, great spotted woodpecker, swallow, house martin, wren, dunnock, robin, nightingale, blackbird, song thrush, reed warbler, common whitethroat, garden warbler, blackcap, chiff chaff, willow warbler, long-tailed tit, great tit, blue tit, jay, magpie, jackdaw, carrion crow, starling, chaffinch, greenfinch and reed bunting.

Many thanks to Terry for leading this walk.
