Titchfield Haven - Thursday 11th September 2008

Thursday, 11 September 2008

7 members enjoyed an excellent day out at a favourite reserve, with grey phalarope, new for most, being the star attraction. The bird was watched from the Spurgin Hide for several minutes, as it fed in characteristic spinning fashion, alongside 4 snoozing spoonbills. From the Pumpfret Hide, a garganey in non breeding plumage caught our attention, and later an immature osprey flew from the reserve up the Solent. This bird had apparently been in situ for a month. A late lunch by the sailing club enabled us to add close views of feeding redshanks, turnstones, ringed plovers and oystercatchers and bathing common terns. The afternoon added a few extra species, notably four whinchats observed from the Knights Bay hide.
