Coach trip to Old Moor RSPB reserve, Dearne Valley, South Yorkshire

Location: Departing from rear of Safeways, Cecil Rd., Hale, Altrincham at 8-30am

This reserve is situated in the heart of the Dearne Valley. It has a number of hides overlooking lakes with islands with mixed vegetation. The reserve holds large numbers of Golden Plover and other waders at this time of year. It is good for Tree Sparrow, Grey Partridge and Kingfishers. Possible sightings of Peregrine may be had as it looks for an easy meal. Even Willow Tit can sometimes be seen on its feeders.

Breakwater Country Park is situated near to Holyhead harbour. The park is an old quarry and has a mixture of scrub habitat, which can often produce Stonechat. A sea watch can produce sightings of grebes and divers and the harbour can hold Black Guillemot.

This reserve is a mixture of habitats, water, scrub and woodland. At this time of year the summer migrants should be arriving and singing to establish both territory and gain a mate. The woodland should have Pied Flycatchers, Redstarts, Willow Warblers, Chiffchaffs and possible Wood Warblers. The water should have House Martins, Swallows and Sand Martins wheeling over, feeding on insects.

This is one of the latest RSPB reserves to be opened in the industrial area of the Tees Valley near Middlesbrough. In May, common terns begin to return to nest on the cockleshell islands whilst the 'drumming' display of male snipes and singing skylarks may be heard. Yellow wagtails may be seen collecting insects to feed their young. Saltholme is also a place for butterflies and dragonflies.

Spurn Point is a spit of land which is the first land fall for many migrants arriving on our shores.
It is famous for turning up rarities when weather conditions are suitable and previous trips have yielded such exciting species as Bluethroat, Wryneck and Yellow Browed Warbler whilst at sea there is a chance of shearwaters and skuas.
