Spurn Point 20th September 2009

Oystercatcher wading in shallow water

Tuesday, 22 September 2009

Our second ever visit to this well known migration hot-spot gave us a
superb days birding in glorious weather. We were dropped off at the
Yorkshire Wildlife Trust's centre near Kilnsea and then many of
us decided to go the extra 3 miles to make our way to the point, either by
bus or on foot. Walking each way proved very fruitful, if tiring, with
many migrants on show, including wheatears, whinchats, redstart, firecrest
and a rather elusive barred warbler. At the point the highlights were a
juvenile red-backed shrike and Lapland bunting. Although there was not a
great deal of sea passage, waders were in good numbers on the estuary side,
including grey and golden plovers, bar-tailed godwits, redshank, curlew and a huge flock of
knot whirling over the mud.
