Ham Wall (ST449397) lies in the northern part of the flood plain about 4.8 km (3 miles) west of Glastonbury, where some 8 square kilometres (3 square miles) of mixed wetland habitat have been created from old peat diggings. The boom of the male bittern can be heard in the spring and in winter large flocks of wild fowl, particularly gadwall, shoveller and teal can be seen. Also millions of starlings roost in the reedbeds at dusk. Adjacent to the reserve is the Shapwick Heath Reserve which is managed by English Nature.
