Westhay Moor

Starling perched on wall

Somerset Wildlife Trust's main site on the Peat Moors covers more than 100 Ha. Restored peat diggings, three miles north-west of Glastonbury, have been transformed into a network of open water, reed bed and the largest surviving fragment of lowland acid mire in the South-West.
In the summer months, the reed beds are alive with the sound of reed warblers and cetti's warblers breed in the scattered scrub, while marsh harrier and hobby hunt overhead. The biggest atttraction is during the autumn and until January/February when several millions of starlings fill the sky as they arrive to roost among the reeds.
The reserve is north-east of the village of Westhay. The car park (ST457437) is just off the road to Godney at the junction with Daggs Lane Drove.
