At Swell Wood, birds noted included blue tit, coal tit, great tit, long-tailed tit, treecreeper, nuthatch, great spotted woodpecker, chaffinch, wood pigeon, jackdaw, crow, rook, robin, goldcrest, blackbird.
Along the droves down on the moor, further species noted included buzzard, stonechat, dunnock, lapwing, fieldfare, redwing, magpie, and goldfinch.
From the observation barn were seen huge congregations of wildfowl and it didn't take long to identify several thousand wigeon, greylag geese, shoveler, teal, pintail, and mallard. A peregrine flew over and scattered everything in its path.
Other memorable sightings were a kingfisher, several snipe, pied wagtail, starlings, wren, meadow pipit, little egret, and what were deemed to be the birds of the day, two female hen harriers.
The final walk back to the car added mistle thrush, house sparrow, heron, raven and possibly brambling
