Nine of us met up for our first trip of the season at Tring Reservoirs. After a cool, breezy start, it turned sunny and warm.
We began at Wilstone - highlights two spotted redshank, common snipe, a green sandpiper and at least eight little egrets. Looking back over the fields we had a great view of a little owl perched on a fence, and counted 16 yellow wagtails, along with several pied, feeding in the newly turned furrows. We also saw two red kites and a hobby in flight, and heard several chiffchaffs singing.
Most of us than moved on to Marsworth, Startop's and Tringford - much busier, and with an angling competition under way. Some of us saw the brief flash of a kingfisher flying across. Nothing much else to note, though it was fun watching some noisy, young great crested grebes demanding dinner.
Aside from 55 bird species, thanks to the warm weather we saw seven different butterflies, four species of dragonfly and a single grasshopper.
