Jubilee River and Christmas Common

Male lapwing in breeding habitat

Sunday, 25 October 2009

A small group of us spent an enjoyable morning at Jubilee River. There were unusual mixed flocks of lapwings and starlings flying together and occupying some of the small islands. Others were dominated by blackheaded gulls and cormorants. We also saw a stonechat and a few skylarks and meadow pipits. After much searching we finally found a couple of snipe. There was a good view of a kestrel hunting, three buzzards and one red kite.

In the afternoon we moved to Christmas Common in search of more red kites. There were plenty on the way there too. The best views of kites were to be seen on the left from the car park.
