The Centre, a partnership between RSPB West Glamorgan Local Group, Gower Ornithological Society, and City and Council of Swansea, has opened every other Sunday morning during the winter months and over the years more than 70 species have been seen from the Centre. The beach at Blackpill is also an important feeding station for migratory birds and, indeed, some surprises turned up on 10th April - a sandwich tern and four wheatears.
Daphne and Colin Jones have managed the Centre since its opening and Colin spoke first at the cake-cutting ceremony and in Welsh and English he thanked all who had contributed to make the Centre a success (see photo). In response, Katie-Jo Luxton, Director for the RSPB Cymru, also thanked the supporters of the Centre and used the concept of protecting the Swansea Bay SSSI as an example of maintaining biodiversity - one of the main priorities for the RSPB in Wales.
