2008 December walk to Drummau Mountain

Friday, 9 January 2009
A Xmas walk was organised starting at Bryncoch heading up the Drummau mountain. It was a cold but sunny late December Sunday when sixteen members assembled at the Dyffryn Arms car park. We headed up a winding footpath through established woodland before we joined a few small lanes. There was a good showing of common birds with thrush, robin, tits, wren, jays in evidence. After walking through a woodland path, we climbed up the steep lanes giving good views across the Bryncoch valley to Neath and towards the Brecon Beacons. Eventually we broke tree cover onto the fields at the cold top of the mountain where fieldfare, thrush, black headed gulls, a flock of golden plover and a single red kite were seen amongst the grazing sheep. The wind chill factor ensured that we did not stay long in this exposed position and so we re-traced our route back to the pub car park seeing a flock of redwing and a buzzard on the farm fields. A very worthwhile walk with birds, views and good company.
