January walk along Pennard Cliffs

Colin Jones
Sunday, 17 January 2010
This was a pleasant, morning walk along the National Trust cliff tops from Southgate to Pobbles passing cliffs, steep heather/gorse banks and hedgerows. The weather was mild, bright and breezy - a complete change to the recent arctic conditions. The cliffs yielded ravens, gulls, jackdaws and a fulmar and out to sea and by the rocks we could see several cormorants. The usual suspects (Tits, finches, pied wagtail, robin, blackbird and thrush) could be seen in the wind swept gorse and cliff-top trees. An occasional buzzard and a solitary kestrel were seen over the golf course area and a little egret were seen in the valley below Pennard Castle. No unusual birds but a pleasant walk all the same.
