January 2012 walk at Kenfig Nature Reserve

It was a murky, mild January morning that could have opened up but decided to stay murky and throw in a little misty rain as well. The group of 16 started from the Kenfig Nature Reserve Visitor Centre and walked south over the golf fairways to Sker House. A sight of two reed buntings, a bullfinch and a flock of lapwings in the distance was all that was seen on the way until Sker House where two stonechat and a song thrush were seen. We walked to the dunes overlooking the rocks and sea shore where some common shorebirds could be seen through the grey haze. After a short break we trekked back to the Visitor Centre in the misty rain but that cleared and we still had a half hour left for the South hide where about a dozen species of duck and water birds were seen (see photo for a view from the hide) but no bittern - one had appeared an hour before we arrived. Not a bad morning with 30 species seen.
