Male snipe singing in the rain

Welcome to the Wigan RSPB Local Group Website.

Wigan RSPB local Group is one of the groups, run entirely by voluntary and enthusiastic members, which you will find in many towns throughout the UK. The group helps to bring the RSPB closer to the people of Wigan and the area around it.

As a charity, all our events are open to everybody - members of the RSPB or not.

Outdoor Events are an ideal opportunity for those wanting to see birds in their natural environment because there is always someone on hand to point out anything of interest and to help with identification. Our current membership includes everyone from complete beginners to lifelong bird-watchers so no-one need feel out of place. At least one weekend and one Wednesday bird trip per month is organised and details are published on a programme card, in the quarterly newsletter and on this website. Outdoor events are free of charge - travel in your own car or arrange a lift with the leader - some bird sites visited charge an admission charge to non-RSPB members.

Indoor Events provide the chance to learn more about birds and other wildlife on winter evenings which are unsuitable for outdoor events. Illustrated talks are given by nationally acknowledged experts in their fields. Meetings are held in the Wigan Council for Voluntary Youth Services' premises, Penson Street, Wigan Lane (near Swinley Labour Club). Talks start at 7:45 pm. Tea, coffee, cold drinks and biscuits are available at all meetings. There is no need to book, just come along, non-members are asked to pay a fee of £2.00 which is refundable against membership at any time within 12 months.

Social Events: Two social events are normally arranged each year, one in winter and the other linked to an evening stroll in the spring.

Membership provides our quarterly newsletter, advanced information of all events, free entry to illustrated talks and the opportunity to see lots of birds! Adults £6.00 pa, Families (living at the same address) £8.50, Single under 16's £1.00. Why not come along to any meeting where there will be a warm welcome. If you like what you see, you can join - but there is no pressure to do so.
