Potteric Potterings

Adult bittern wading in reedbed at Lee Valley Country Park

Sunday, 16 March 2008

The trip to Potteric Carr is one that our group always enjoys. A route which is mainly motorway means a reasonable journey time. The site has mainly easy walking and good facilities. The chance of Bittern is always a lure.

The day started wet and gloomy but by the time we got to Yorkshire the weather had improved to mild and dry. Most of the Group set off in the direction of the hide from which the Bittern had last been reported, others made off in the direction of the little wet woodland area in which a pair of Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers had been reported. They proved to be elusive to many, but fortunately some of us got good prolonged views from reasonable distance. And a Greater Spotted too, for good measure. Treecreeper, Bullfinch and Goldcrest were all good birds. A Kingfisher posed on an island and the Bittern did a couple of fly-pasts. Top notch day out.
