Mid-week walk at Levington

Curlew standing on weed, County Cork, Ireland

Wednesday, 19 November 2008

A group of 31 members met at Levington Marina and on a pleasant sunny morning walked to Loompit Lake which was alive with several bird species. These included large numbers of coot, wigeon, gadwall and mute swan along with mallard, tufted duck, pochard, Canada and greylag geese, grey heron and little and great crested grebe. Looking in the opposite direction over the River Orwell a number of waders could be seen. Avocet, curlew, black-tailed godwit, knot, grey plover, ringed plover, redshank, oystercatcher, dunlin and turnstone were present in reasonable numbers. Continuing along the path towards Trimley Marshes flocks of cormorant and Brent geese came into view. In all 43 species were recorded. A very satisfying morning's birdwatching.
