Group Long Weekend to Anglesey

Sea cliffs near Upper Killeyan, Mull of Oa, Islay

Saturday, 6 October 2007

The Group spent 5 days in Criccieth, visiting Anglesy, the Lleyn Peninsula, and a day on Bardsey Island. The weather was good and stonechats, wheatears, whitethroats and siskins were seen, along with various waterfowl. At Malltraeth a couple of whimbrel were spotted. But most of us had come for Bardsey and as we sailed to the island had a good sighting of peregrine falcon and chough. At Bardsey, an island about the size of Skomer, there were over 50 grey seals in the bay. It was lovely sitting in the sun eating lunch and watching choughs feeding, swallows swooping over thefields and flocks of linnets dropping into a wheatfield.
Back on the mainland we travelled through Holyhead to South Stack to see puffin, razorbill, guillemot, kittiwakes, more chough and raven. Only one person had the energy to make the trudge up to the lighthouse where the view was spectacular. Altogether, a very successful trip.
