Fewer than 50 people have walked on this unspoilt land in the last century

The landmark purchase of Sutton Fen was made possible by the generosity of RSPB supporters who donated money to our appeal launched in late October 2006, together with a grant of £465,300 from the Tubney Charitable Trust, £50,000 from the Garfield Weston Foundation and two very substantial legacies bequeathed to the RSPB.
These fantastic donations have enabled us to secure this site for nature conservation and for future generations to enjoy.
The RSPB has been waiting for the chance to acquire habitat in the Broads of this quality for at least 20 years. In the past, wetland like this covered large swathes of eastern England. Today, after drainage for agriculture, industry and tourism, it is confined to a few small pockets in the landscape.
Rare and fascinating birds once common in the countryside, like bitterns, bearded tits, and common cranes, all use Sutton Fen.
For them to remain a part of our natural heritage, and for species like the swallowtail butterfly, Norfolk hawker dragonfly, otter and water vole, we must protect the habitats they depend on.
Now thanks to you, we have the chance to protect this pristine natural heritage forever as a tranquil oasis of wetland wilderness, full of rare and endangered wildlife in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the modern day Broads. Under the stewardship of the RSPB, the 170 hectares at Sutton Fen will be an important part of a network of protected wetland habitats, vital to the survival of some of Britain's most treasured, and most endangered species.
You have already made a difference - but your contribution will continue to make a lasting difference to the nation's wetland natural heritage for years to come.
There is much work to be done at Sutton Fen and we need to raise an additional £75,000 over the next the three years, to manage the new nature reserve for wildlife and future generations to enjoy.
We would like to say a sincere thank you to all of you who have supported this project so far.
For the sake of all of the wildlife that depends on this special habitat, please help the RSPB to protect Sutton Fen.
Donating online is easy and ensures that more of your money is used for conservation.
