Sunday 23 September marks a milestone event for Europe’s largest conservation charity, RSPB, as their supporters embark upon their inaugural abseil down Belfast’s iconic Europa Hotel.
Participants will have to steel their nerves and brave the elements as they descend 130 feet in the name of saving nature.
Celebrating her status as the charity’s first ever abseiler in Northern Ireland, Hayley Sherwin said of the event, “I’m really excited to be taking part in this abseil, which will help to raise funds for RSPB to continue their fantastic work to save nature in Northern Ireland. I have volunteered at two of the local reserves, Portmore Lough and Belfast Harbour, so I have seen first hand the great work that RSPB does.
“I’m hoping to raise at least £100 by asking my family and friends to sponsor me to step over the edge. I would say to anyone who likes a challenge to take part and join us as we abseil from the dizzy heights of the Europa, in the name of nature!”
Also abseiling on 23 September is Kevin Mawhinney who commented, “I’ve taken part in a number of abseils over the years but this will be the first time I‘ve done it to raise funds for charity. I plan to raise my £100 by hosting a coffee morning at work and asking colleagues and friends to donate in support of RSPB.”
RSPB’s Senior Community Fundraising Officer Laura Thomson explains why the charity needs your support: “All the money raised from this abseil will go towards funding projects that benefit people and wildlife in Northern Ireland. By taking on the challenge of fundraising for RSPB you can help support conservation work at our reserves across Northern Ireland, or enable our Education team to inspire and empower young people to step up for nature from a young age. We depend on the support of the local community to be able to carry out the conservation work that we do. Every penny raised will be spent on making Northern Ireland a better place for us all to enjoy so please support RSPB by taking on the challenge of abseiling one of Belfast’s most famous buildings!”
