We have been lucky with the weather and the wildlife recently. Excitingly, a hen harrier was spotted flying over the reserve on 2 October, and a couple of willow warblers were heard around the visitor centre on the 4 October. The waders have been showing themselves really well from the Ashby, Moorhen and Draper Hides. Water rail, snipe, redshank, lapwing and green sandpiper have all been seen quite regularly. Up to eight green sandpipers were seen from the Draper Hide over the weekend of the 13 and 14 October. The kingfishers are still active, fishing from all over the site – although the male’s favourite spot seems to be the area of water from the Ashby Hide. It has been wildfowl galore all over Rye Meads, with birds such as mallard, gadwall, shoveler, wigeon, teal, mute swan and Canada geese being seen most days.
