A sleepy surprise has been discovered at an RSPB nature reserve. For the first time in the wildlife charity’s forty-year ownership of Wolves Wood in Suffolk, signs of the rare and elusive dormouse were discovered last week.

The RSPB is expressing serious concern over potential damage to one of the region’s most ancient areas of woodland. A proposal for National Grid’s preferred route for the new Bramford to Twinstead power connection in Suffolk would mean that the power pylons cut right through the heart of this special woodland.

Suffolk is famous for the return of the avocet to breed at Havergate Island and Minsmere, the latter now the RSPB’s flagship reserve and a stronghold of the endangered bittern.
At Lakenheath Fen, the RSPB has transformed carrot fields to a wetland nature reserve attracting bearded tits and cranes.
Fields and heaths in the Brecks are home to stone-curlews. Clearings in Thetford Forest are strongholds for woodlarks and nightjars, as are the coastal forest and Sandlings heaths.
