There’s a lot to keep families entertained at Leighton Moss during the summer holidays.

It’s August, the summer holidays are now in full swing and nature is too!  It’s the time of year when there are abundant insects, wonderful wildflowers, and animals raising their young.  Whatever the weather, why not discover the amazing summer wildlife at RSPB Leighton Moss nature reserve in Silverdale, where there are lots of activities for families to enjoy.

Put your navigation skills to the test with the Family Map Challenge, taking place on 1, 8, 15 and 22 August.  Your family team can have a go at this self-guided activity around part of the reserve and can turn up and take part any time between 10am and 3pm. The event costs £10 for a family, but it is free for RSPB members.

The ever popular children’s favourite, pond dipping will be the fun activity of the day on 9 and 23 August. Choose from 11.30am to 1pm or 1.30pm to 3pm to find out what weird and wonderful creatures are lurking at the bottom of the pond.  The cost is £4 per child which is discounted to £3 for RSPB Wildlife Explorer members.

For children over 8 years there are Wildlife Activity Days on 14 and 21 August. In this ‘parent free zone’ children can discover the wildlife of Leighton Moss with games and activities led by the reserve’s wildlife activity team.  The Wildlife Activity Days run from 10.30am – 2.30pm. The cost is £14 for non-members, discounted to £12 for RSPB Wildlife Explorer members.

On 16 August children can make a red deer ‘hobby horse’.  All they need to do is bring along an old sock!  Everything else will be found during a short walk in the woodland on the day.  The cost per child is £4 for non-members which is discounted to £3 for RSPB Wildlife Explorer members.

Audrey Duckworth, Visitor Officer Intern said “There’s a lot to keep families entertained at Leighton Moss during the summer holidays.  Our family activities give an excellent opportunity for kids and grown-ups to get first-hand experience of the natural world together.”

Booking is required for pond dipping, the Wildlife Activity Days and the hobby red deer activity by phoning 01524 701601.
