Pond dipping at Fairburn Ings

Fairburn Ings is a great place for kids to explore!

Mystery trails, bug hotels, hedgehog-house building and spooky torchlight walks are just some of the activities on offer at RSPB Fairburn Ings this half-term holiday.

The nature reserve, near Castleford, has a packed week of activities planned which will entertain and delight adults and children alike throughout the holidays.

Chris Woolner, Visitor Experience Manager, said: “Fairburn Ings is a great place for kids to explore, discover new things and go wild. From mystery trails and quizzes to searching for hidden creatures below the water, there really is so much to capture the imagination.

“And if the weather takes a turn for the worse – or you simply don’t fancy getting wet and muddy – we’ll have plenty of crafts and activities taking place in the visitor centre, and you can get a hot drink and a snack at the same time.”

Visitors can also get into the Halloween spirit with a Halloween Party on Wednesday evening (31 October), spooky torchlight walks and sessions on how to ‘Build a Bug Hotel’. Throughout the week there will also be craft activities, themed trails and plenty of opportunities to discover the vast range of wildlife around the reserve, as well as the children’s adventure play area and family friendly discovery zone.

The RSPB is urging families to get outdoors and explore so that children can get to know, value and enjoy nature, and go on to look after it as adults. Children’s disconnection from nature is one of the biggest threats facing the natural World and wildlife. Find out more at  www.rspb.org.uk/getoutdoors.

Fairburn Ings is open 9.30am-5.00pm each day throughout the half-term holiday, with free entry. Car parking is £2.50 for non-members and selected activities incur a small fee.  Booking is essential for the Halloween party and the ‘Build a Bug Hotel’ activity.
