We are saddened today to hear of the death of Seamus Heaney. Having grown up in the Castledawson / Bellaghy area, he had a deep appreciation for the natural landscape of the area, including the wetlands around Lough Beg.

This landscape provided inspiration for Seamus Heaney and his legacy will go beyond the words he wrote.

We will forever remember how he brought the beauty of this landscape into the hearts and minds of so many people. In his own words he recently described the Lough Beg area as the Country of the Mind “a dream land that was once the real land, a shore at evening, quiet water, wind in the grass, the call of birds, maybe a man or woman out in a back field just standing looking, counting cattle, listening.” Those words  He was a remarkable man and our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with his family at this very sad time.
