No way to Levels Motorway!Last modified: 02 July 2009
An open letter from the Campaign Against the Levels Motorway (CALM) Alliance has urged the Welsh Assembly Government to save the Gwent Levels Site of Special Scientific Interest from the ‘concrete pourers’ forever. The letter, signed by the Directors of RSPB Cymru, Gwent Wildlife Trust, Friends of the Earth Cymru, and WWF Cymru asks Deputy First Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones to drop the new M4 toll road from the Wales Transport Plan, which will be published imminently. Julian Branscombe, Director of Gwent Wildlife Trust and Chairman of CALM, said: “If the Welsh Assembly Government are truly serious about sustainable development and reaching the 3% green house gas reduction target, set out in the One Wales coalition agreement, they will abandon these damaging plans forever.” “In this time of global warming and recession the £1bn needed to build the new motorway should be spent on upgrading the current M4 and improving and integrating public transport.” The current proposal for the new M4 is to build a fifteen-mile, six-lane toll motorway across important wildlife habitats on the Gwent Levels between Magor and Castleton. The road will cut across the Gwent Levels Site of Special Scientific Interest, damaging important wildlife habitats, which are home to lapwing, curlew, otter, water vole and rare plants and insects.
