Wave of people from Shropshire flows to London for UK's biggest ever climate change march

Hundreds of people of all ages from Shropshire will flow to London on 5 December to take part in a massive human wave to call on the UK Government for strong leadership on climate action ahead of crunch talks at the UN climate summit in Copenhagen.  

Called The Wave, the event will be the largest demonstration on climate change ever seen in the UK. 

Tens of thousands of people of all ages and from all walks of life will flow through the streets of London in a giant wave of support for a safe climate future for all. The marchers will be donning blue clothing and face paint and carrying blue banners to join a carnival-style procession. [For preview photos, see notes to Editors.] 

The Wave is being organised by Stop Climate Chaos - a coalition of over 100 organisations, from environment and development charities to unions, faith, community and women's groups.  

The RSPB will be there along with organisations from the Stop Climate Chaos Coalition, and is calling on people of Shropshire to come down to London to take part in The Wave too. 

Anna Keen who’s from Shrewsbury and works for the RSPB said: “I’m one of hundreds of people from Shropshire who’ll be going to The Wave in London to join the UK’s biggest ever demonstration on climate change. 

“It’s going to be a great day out for all the family, at a crucial time as world leaders will be about to meet in Copenhagen to negotiate a global climate change deal. 

“By joining The Wave we will send a clear message to Gordon Brown that we want the Government to take fair and fast action on climate change to protect wildlife and the millions of people, especially in poor countries, from suffering its effects.” 

The Stop Climate Chaos coalition is calling on the Government to: 

  • Act Fair & Fast: deliver a fair global deal in Copenhagen that keeps global warming under 2 degrees C.
  • Protect the Poorest: provide resources to help the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people adapt to climate change.
  • Quit Dirty Coal: end our reliance on dirty coal power, and instead boost the UK’s renewable energy supply to help build a green economy and create new jobs.
