Habitat management training courses

Cattle at Ouse Washes
Lowland wet grassland is the subject of one of the courses

The RSPB runs a programme of habitat management training courses for a wide range of professional audiences. These include conservation site managers, conservation advisers, private landowners and staff from statutory agencies.

These courses are based on the RSPB’s research and land management experience (the RSPB manages over 125,000 ha of land for nature conservation), as well as drawing on other experts in the field.

Experienced conservation practitioners with expertise in training delivery and group facilitation lead the courses, which include significant elements of fieldwork to ensure that they remain practical and applied.

Places on each course are limited to 15-20 to maximise the opportunities for group participation and individual learning.

We offer training courses in conservation management of the following habitats:

  • Lowland wet grassland
  • Reedbed
  • Heathland
  • Scrub and woodland
  • Lowland and upland farmland

We also offer courses on the habitat management requirements of black grouse, capercaillie, waders, corncrake and farmland birds.

Courses cover issues such as site assessment, species identification, favourable condition of designated sites - understanding what it is, how to restore and maintain it, and the habitat requirements of key species. In addition, they also discuss habitat creation and monitoring techniques.

As well as running open courses on which places are allocated on a 'first-come, first-served' basis, we can also provide bespoke training courses for organisations and groups.

Details of the courses we will be running during the year, and a booking form, are available to download by clicking on the links to the right.
