Managing nature reserves

Millpond at RSPB Fairy Glen reserve

We manage over 200 nature reserves across the UK and these support a diverse range of wildlife and habitats.

In fact, we've now recorded over 13,300 species on our reserves – about a quarter of the UK’s total complement of terrestrial species. Of these, only about 3 per cent are birds! And with public access to 184 reserves, we bring people close to nature and this vast array of species.

We bought our first reserve in 1930 and since then we've built up a wealth of expertise in habitat creation and management. We're still trialling new methods, but we're putting this expertise into practice to make our reserves even better for wildlife and people.

Reserves review

We report on our achievements each year in the Reserves Review. You can download the latest copy and back copies from this page.

The 2011 review looks back at work carried out during 2010. It considers the role our reserves can play in halting biodiversity loss, with sections on saving nature, restoring lost habitats, providing wildlife experiences for people, benefiting the environment and supporting partners round the world.
